FilmCraft · Alternative to Premiere Pro

FilmCraft: Free, Open-Source Premiere Pro Alternative

FilmCraft is an open-source, clean-room video editor in pure Rust that follows the Premiere Pro workflow for editing, color and sound.

What FilmCraft does

A timeline you already know

Source and Program monitors, three-point editing, ripple, roll, slip, slide and dynamic trimming, with every edit computed on exact integer time.

Lumetri-style color grading

Basic Correction, Creative looks, Curves, Color Wheels, HSL Secondary and Vignette, graded in linear light at 32-bit float with honest scopes.

Premiere's full effects bin

Premiere 26's 93 video effects in 16 folders, the Legacy bin, about 30 transitions, and keyframes with value and velocity graphs.

Broadcast-grade audio

EBU R128 loudness meters, clip effects on its own DSP library, Track and Clip Mixers, and Read, Latch, Touch and Write automation.

Own codecs, no FFmpeg

H.264, HEVC, ProRes, AAC, VP9, AV1 and DNxHR codecs are its own Rust code, written from public specifications and tested against ffmpeg.

Interchange with other editors

Timelines move in and out as FCP7 XML, FCPXML, OpenTimelineIO, CMX 3600 EDL, AAF and OMF.

File formats

  • FCPROJ (native, read/write)
  • MP4/MOV (read/write)
  • Matroska/WebM (read)
  • MXF (read/write)
  • H.264 (read/write)
  • HEVC (read; export via hardware encoder only)
  • ProRes (read/write)
  • DNxHD/DNxHR (read/write)
  • VP9, AV1 (read)
  • FCP7 XML, FCPXML, OTIO, EDL, AAF (read/write)
  • OMF (export)
  • SRT/WebVTT/SCC captions (read/write)
  • PNG sequence, animated GIF, WAV (export)

How mature is it?

Alpha, "young and moving fast": editing, trimming, multicam, colour, effects, titles, captions, mixing and export work today; feature breadth ~86%, ready for real work ~56% (re-measured 2026-10-10).

Project’s own estimate: ready for real work~56%

Biggest gaps

  • Premiere .prproj projects cannot be opened yet; sequences must come over as FCP7 XML, AAF or OTIO.
  • Speed on big footage: Lumetri, keys and export rendering still run on the CPU.
  • No plugin hosting (VST3, Audio Units or OpenFX), and H.264 is the only software delivery-codec export.
  • Real-world camera and phone files are less tested, and Windows and Linux get far less testing than macOS.

Automation and AI agents

More than 650 engine commands are shared by the UI, filmcraft-cli, a JSON-lines control channel and an MCP server, so an agent can cut, trim, grade, mix and export like a person.

FilmCraft questions

Can FilmCraft open Premiere Pro projects?
Not yet. .prproj files cannot be opened; bring sequences over as FCP7 XML, AAF or OpenTimelineIO instead. Opening .prproj is one of the conditions the project sets for beta.
Does FilmCraft use FFmpeg?
No. The video codecs, AAC, Opus and the containers are its own Rust code from public ITU-T, ISO and IETF specifications. ffmpeg is used only as an external reference in tests.
Is hardware acceleration supported?
Hardware decoding works on macOS and Windows, and for H.264 and HEVC on Linux. H.264 export can use hardware encoders; H.265 export is hardware-only. Lumetri, keys and export rendering still run on the CPU.
